“中國古代經典英譯本匯釋匯校”中期檢查情況

一、研究進展情況

一、學術會議

(一)2011年1月23日至25日,本課題在深圳召開開題論証會。中國人民大學楊慧林教授、耿幼壯教授,北京師范大學方維規教授,北京大學劉樹森教授,香港中文大學李熾昌(Archie Lee)教授,香港浸會大學費樂仁(Lauren Pfister)教授,牛津大學羅伯特•恰德(Robert Chard)教授受聘擔任本課題學術委員並共同確定了以下事項。

1、吸收部分教師、博士生和博士后研究人員參與研究工作,包括教師李麗琴(人大)、管恩森(山東大學),以及本課題負責人指導的博士生邱業祥、趙倞和博士后陳敘、姜哲、高志強﹔其中三名博士后人員的研究計劃均擬根據本課題所及內容予以制定。同時還擬增補耶魯大學司馬懿(Chloe Starr)副教授為本課題學術委員會委員。

2、課題第一期集中於《論語》和《道德經》兩部經典,以理雅各(James Legge)的譯文和注疏作為底本,其他版本作為補充。由課題組統一收集相關文獻。

3、第一期成果擬分為系列論文和工具書兩部分。系列論文由課題組成員分別完成,課題組主辦的《基督教文化學刊》將為本課題編輯專輯,收錄課題論文和譯文。工具書擬包括“題解”、“錄文”、“譯解綱目”、“譯解對勘”、“英譯本導言匯編”、“版本信息”。

4、本課題學術委員會將組織專題學術研討會,並與西方“經文辯讀”(Scriptural Reasoning)的代表性學者展開對話。

(二)2011年8月3日至7日,課題組主辦的暑期國際研討班在北京舉行,50多位學者與會,圍繞“經典翻譯與經文辯讀”進行了專題研討。9位來自不同國家和地區的學者作了專題演講,包括斯洛伐克科學院高利克(Marián Gálik),瑞士蘇黎世大學韋寧(Ralph Weber),英國牛津大學羅伯特•恰德(Robert Chard),美國貝勒大學威廉斯(Daniel Williams),澳大利亞紐斯卡爾大學玻爾(Roland Böer),台灣大學林鴻信,台灣中原大學曾慶豹,以及中國人民大學楊慧林和劉小楓。

(三)2012年8月27-31日,課題組在中國人民大學蘇州校區舉辦專題會議暨暑期國際研討班,邀請中國大陸(3名)、英國(4名)、澳大利亞(1名)、香港(2名)、台灣(2名)的重要學者提供主題發言,並圍繞本課題的階段性成果與前來參會的大約50名青年學者進行研討。

(四)2013年7月16-24日課題組在第20屆國際比較文學學會巴黎年會上召開以“經文辯讀與比較文學”為主題的圓桌會議,邀請David Ford, Peter Ochs等12位哲學家一起就相關論題進行探討。

(五)2013年8月5-8日課題組利用第九屆“神學與人文學”國際暑期研討班邀請了10位來自英國、美國和香港地區的學者繼續“經文辯讀”的話題。

(六)2014年2月26日至3月2日, 課題組主要成員參加在美國南卡羅來納大學舉行的“中國與西方:1950年以及其后的經典翻譯”中美雙邊學術研討會,就經典翻譯和比較文學研究的論題和西方學者展開了進一步對話。

(七)2014年3月18-19課題組召開了“建構東西方:經典的翻譯”國際學術研討會,來自美國、加拿大、英國和香港地區的11位學者共聚一堂,從翻譯的角度探討“經文辯讀”的問題與實踐。

(八) 2014年5月18-19日課題組與芝加哥大學神學院的兩位學者William Schweiker 和Dwight Hopkins 召開小型研討會,從倫理學的角度探討經文辯讀。

二、國際合作

(一)2012年4月24日,課題組邀請西方“經文辯讀”運動的主要代表、美國弗吉尼亞大學資深教授Peter Ochs就“經文辯讀的歷史、現狀及未來”在中國人民大學發表學術演講。4月26日,中央民族大學又邀請Peter Ochs 和本課題首席專家楊慧林舉辦專場對話,深入討論了不同文化傳統之間的“經文辯讀”及其潛在價值。

(二)2012年6月18-20日,楊慧林及課題組主要成員耿幼壯出席倫敦大學國王學院舉辦的圓桌會議,其間楊慧林做主題發言Scriptural Reasoning and the Hermeneutical Circle,西方“經文辯讀”的另一位代表、英國劍橋大學David Ford教授以及國王學院Oliver Davies教授予以回應。

(三)2012年2月,美國Baylor University Press總編輯Carey C. Newman來訪,商定為本課題出版三部英文論文集,其中楊慧林的Religion and Interpretation已經交稿,將於2013年出版,耿幼壯、汪海的兩部文集也正在翻譯之中。

(四)英國牛津大學出版社出版的A&HCI檢索刊物Religion and Literature派現任主編出席本課題於2012年8月27-31日在蘇州召開的會議,會后商定由該刊出版一期專輯。

(五)西方“經文辯讀”的兩位主要代表英國劍橋大學David Ford教授於2012年10月來訪,美國弗吉尼亞大學Peter Ochs教授於2013年4月再次來訪。其間將討論2015年春季在美國弗吉尼亞大學就本課題再度召開對話會議的細節。

(六)課題組已經與荷蘭著名的“Brill”出版社初步達成合作意向,2014年9月雙方將對合作的具體形式和細節進行深入的討論。希望借助這一國際化平台,本課題的部分成果可以英文出版。

三、《工作簡報》

本課題自立項以來,已分別於2011年4月21日、2011年10月29日、2012年5月9日報送三期《工作簡報》。

目前課題組就“中國思想何以進入西方的概念系統”及“經典如何走入現代:從《論語》英譯看經典翻譯的詮釋學視域”撰寫《成果要報》,上報國家社科基金規劃辦,作為第一階段研究工作的小結。

四、文獻資料收集整理

課題組前期工作小組於2011年2月23日成立,落實《論語》和《道德經》英文譯本的信息搜集,河南省社科院丁巍研究員提供了國家社科基金項目“老學典籍考”(2004年結項)成果中的英文譯本部分。截至4月6日,工作小組完成了一份包括370余種《道德經》譯本信息和110余種《論語》譯本的書單,並核實了大多數書籍的購買方式。

與此同時,工作小組已將“《論語》和《道德經》英譯本書目”和“未找到購買方式的書目”發給全體課題組成員和參與研究的相關學者,以協助購買、復印、掃描珍本書籍。

五、下一階段的研究設想

2011年以來,本課題編輯出版了《經文辯讀》、《傳教士與中國經典》、《“譯經”與“釋經”》等三部專輯,為《中國人民大學學報》組織了“經文辯讀:中西之間的思想對話”專欄文章,同時也在其他國內外刊物發表了相關成果,並與國外相關領域的代表性學者進行了深入的對話和合作。下一階段擬在文獻整理和比較研究兩個方面進一步拓展。

在文獻整理方面,課題組重點落實項目的主體成果的出版工作。第一期成果由南京大學出版社出版,包括:《〈論語〉英譯本序跋釋要》、《〈論語〉英譯本版本題錄》、《〈論語〉英譯本研究文獻》、《〈論語〉英譯本譯注匯編》、《〈論語〉英譯本術語引得》。此外,課題組將針對第一期工作的經驗和不足進行總結,在此基礎上著手展開《道德經》的英譯本匯釋匯校的工作。

在比較研究方面,課題組將通過各種形式的學術會議和學術交流活動深化與西方學界的對話:計劃於2014年9月初舉辦第四屆世界漢學大會、2014年9月中舉辦中國比較文學年會分論壇暨暑期國際研討班等,並積極參與國外主辦的學術會議。對話將圍繞“中國思想何以進入西方的概念系統”這一主題,並希望由此生發開來,在“經典如何走入現代”、“中國經典新譯、外譯”、“傳統文化的繼承和發展”、“經典互譯和比較文學研究”等論題上有進一步的闡發。

注:2010年立項的重大項目主要填寫2012年6月以來的研究進展情況。

二、研究成果情況

國家社科基金重大項目“中國古代典籍英譯本匯釋匯校”曾於2012年6月提交中期評估,並以三項“系列論文”作為代表性成果:楊慧林《中西“經文辯讀”的可能性及其價值》(《中國社會科學》2011年第1期),《經文辯讀》、《傳教士與中國經典》、《“譯經”與“釋經”》(《基督教文化學刊》25輯、26輯、27輯)等三輯專刊,楊慧林《“經文辯讀”與“詮釋的循環”》、Peter Ochs《經文辯讀:從實踐到理論》等五篇專欄文章(《中國人民大學學報》2012年第5期)。其中第一項成果被列為2013年國家社科基金在研重大項目的55項代表性成果之一。

2012年以后,課題組又在《中國文化研究》(2013年春之卷)發表一組專欄文章“中國思想何以進入西方的概念系統”,在《中國高校社會科學》(2013年第一期)發表《文化傳播的雙向考察:名詞的動詞性與動詞的交互性》,在牛津大學出版的A&HCI學術刊物Literature and Theology, vol.28, No.2 (2014)發表'Scriptural Reasoning' and the 'Hermeneutical Circle',在美國Baylor University Press出版論文集China, Christianity and the Question of Culture (2014)等等。

在系列論文之外,本課題的主體成果也逐漸逐步完成,並將由南京大學出版社出版, 擬於2014年年底交付出版的第一卷(共五冊)如下:

1.1《〈論語〉英譯本序跋釋要》,李丙權主編。本冊遴選了1691-2003年間具有代表性的英譯本前言或導論17篇,力求展示《論語》英譯的歷史脈絡及不同的翻譯模式,並著重前言和導論本身的學術價值。本冊約30萬字,已交付出版社。目錄如下:

1.4《〈論語〉英譯本譯注匯編》,徐建委主編。本冊按照“錄文”、“綱目”、“對勘”順序編排。以理雅各譯本1960年版為底本,輔以該譯本1861和1893年的兩個版本﹔以韋利、蘇慧廉、劉殿爵、西蒙•萊斯、安樂哲的譯本為校本﹔以《論語》各節的原文開頭,隨后分錄上述各家的譯文、注釋及其所據的中文注疏﹔最后附以本節譯文的綱目和對勘。預計10月份完成並交付出版社。

1.5《〈論語〉英譯本術語引得》,張靖主編。在第四卷的基礎上,本冊通過預先設計的自動生成檢索系統,以楊伯峻《論語譯注》所列詞語為基礎,按照關鍵詞(出現次數)、譯文1(譯者 章節)、譯文2(譯者 章節)、譯文3……順序編排。章節從楊伯峻本,如1.1表示《學而》篇第一章。本冊將在7月底完成《論語》六個譯本的輸入工作﹔9月底完成注釋的輸入工作。
